Liam –
Eni Cladium 400 is marketed as an engine oil for stationary gas engines. My concern is the oil’s resistance to nitration, a common issue in gas engines. What are the typical nitration levels (measured by FTIR or other methods) observed in Eni Cladium 400 during standard engine testing, and does this oil contain specific additives to mitigate nitration and maintain its TBN (Total Base Number) over extended operating hours?
Lubesta –
Nitration resistance is indeed a crucial factor for gas engine oils, especially those operating under demanding conditions. Nitration occurs when nitrogen oxides react with the oil, leading to increased viscosity, sludge formation, and reduced oil life. High-quality gas engine oils, like Eni Cladium 400, are typically formulated with antioxidants and detergents/dispersants specifically designed to combat nitration. FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) is a common method for measuring nitration levels in used oil samples. While the product page does not contain specific nitration data, you should request the technical data sheet from Eni or Lubesta. The data sheet may contain information on oxidation, nitration, and sulfation levels and give insight into the performance. Furthermore, the oil’s TBN retention is also a critical indicator of its ability to neutralize acidic byproducts formed during combustion, including nitric acid. A higher TBN retention indicates better long-term protection against nitration and corrosion. In general, an oil suitable for gas engines operating at higher operating temperatures would be a robust formulation.
