jef –
This Nyco Grease GN HC is described as a “severe duty grease” for various applications. I’m considering it for lubricating heavily loaded bearings in a wet and corrosive environment (marine application). While the description mentions “excellent resistance to water washout,” I need more specific data. What is the ASTM D4049 Water Washout rating of this grease, and does it contain any specific corrosion inhibitors to protect against saltwater corrosion?
Lubesta –
Your concern about water washout and corrosion resistance in a marine environment is valid and critical. Severe duty greases are intended for this application. Ideally, an ASTM D4049 water washout rating would be available on the product data sheet. Since the product page doesn’t directly list it, you should request the technical data sheet from Lubesta. A good rating would be a low percentage loss (e.g., less than 5% loss) after the test. Also, In regards to corrosion protection, most high-performance greases designed for severe duty, particularly those marketed for marine applications, will contain corrosion inhibitors. Typical additives would include zinc compounds or sulfonates. However, specifically for salt water, some formulations also include calcium sulfonate to combat the aggressive chloride ions. Verify the product’s data sheet to confirm the presence and type of corrosion inhibitors, and consider running a salt spray test (ASTM B117) on the grease if you require a very high level of confidence in its corrosion protection capabilities.
